Dan Lutz (1906-1978)
Our painting by Dan Lutz, "Baby Burro,"
is an oil on canvas, done in the 1950s, and was purchased
from the Dalzell Hatfield Gallery in the late '50s. I met
the artist at a reception at the gallery, and was very
impressed by his work ( I love the way he puts oil paint on
canvas!)
I remember that party very well for a
couple of reasons. It was a formal affair, held in the large
reception room of the Hatfield Gallery, which had a
beautiful decorative pool in the center, and tables set up
around it. Many of us wore tuxes, including Dan Lutz. During
the course of the evening,
Hatfield was talking to another of the guests, and they were
arguing about the eccentricity of most artists, the guest
claiming that they were all a bit odd. Hatfield said that
wasn't true at all, and said "I'll prove it to you... see
that man standing over there across the lobby; that's Dan
Lutz, and he is as normal as you and I. Dan! Come on over,
I'd like you to meet somebody." So Dan Lutz strolled across
the lobby right through the pool, about knee-deep , wearing
his tux! We bought the painting anyway!
At the same party, Dal Hatfield taught me
how to make a "Hatfield Martini." After mixing Boodle's gin
and vermouth, he floated a jigger of cognac on the top and
it was delicious!
